ARTRIOTI — The Faces We Remember
A portrait of Aleko Konstantinov — Bulgarian writer, satirist and one of the sharpest observers of society in our literary history.
„Разни хора, разни идеали“ is a well-known cycle of four feuilletons written at the end of the 19th century. With humour, irony and criticism, Aleko portrays the morals, spiritual emptiness and lack of true values in post-Liberation Bulgaria.
What makes the work so powerful is how contemporary it can still feel — the characters change, the century changes, but some human weaknesses remain surprisingly familiar.
This original illustration is part of ARTRIOTI — my illustrated archive of the writers, artists, actors and musicians who left a lasting mark on Bulgarian culture.
WHY I DREW HIM
I drew Алеко Константинов because his satire is never just funny.
There is always something underneath it — disappointment, observation and a very precise understanding of people.
„Разни хора, разни идеали“ speaks about opportunism, ambition, false morality and the ease with which principles can disappear when personal interest takes over.
More than a century later, it still makes us laugh — and then makes us think.
That is exactly why Aleko belongs in ARTRIOTI.
I draw them so we don’t forget them.
